furikku's newbie tips

Below is a helpful guide on how to get started in the RPG as submitted by Furikku to the OOC list. Thanks Furikku! ^_^

"Ah, the debatable joys of being a noob... There's this AWESOME game, looks like SO much fun, and everyone's interacting all over the place!

Everyone except for you. And it all looks like a bunch of closed-circle cliques. How could any new character possibly get in??

Surprisingly, pretty easily and painlessly.

Furikku's Guide to Getting Into the Game Plots:

- Lurk a bit and read over the archives. Have an idea who's where. If you're trying to break into a group somewhere, it's always a good idea to know whether your character CAN; you're more likely to be welcomed into a group on, say, the street, or in some other public place, rather than in a private area that your character couldn't get to.

- Be on the lookout for unoccupied characters. You see that bit in parentheses that says "Attn: Anyone"? Heads up! That means the player is looking for interaction and doesn't care where he/she gets it. Over the past (week? However long I've been a member...) I've seen countless people stumbling about with "Attn: Anyone" on their subject lines, and most of them have been pretty successful. (And, from personal experience, I can guarantee you that nobody will get mad at you for jumping on that "Attn: Anyone." Just go for it!)

- This is an important one: When you do post, make sure other people can actually respond! Don't have your character entering a private residence, or just walking off and ignoring someone - nobody sane could possibly respond to that! Ask a question, make an action, leave a loose end for the other player to latch onto. Few things are so annoying as trying to interact with a character whose player leaves no openings.

- Go to where the people are. If everyone's in the diner, have your character be hungry and wander in. Don't have your character go wandering around alone in the graveyard - what's she gonna interact with, the crypts? Gaming is a give-and-take operation: you gotta GIVE the other characters the reason and opportunity to respond to yours. Not even the psychic characters are likely to say, "Oh, hey, I'm randomly getting a hunch that we should wander out to Random Graveyard to talk to someone there." It's your job to bring your character to the action, not the other way around.

- Don't limit your interaction to just a few characters you really want to talk to, or you'll be waiting forever for an opening. Just look for someone who's free, have fun, and wait for the person you're DYING to play with to be open. Hey, if nothing else, you're getting into the character. Besides, random connections are never a bad thing..."
